back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

the record opens with utopia , a luminous, evocative and fascinating track by the german artist hyboid, the undoubted leader of space and cosmic sounds. the british artist kid machine replicates on the same album side with the track fighting fears , which includes echoes of disco and den haag sounds. on the other side of this 12inch, we will listen first to monologues , a hypnotic-percussive track signed by the renowned french artist in aeternam vale. non auro, sed ferro by hesperius draco closes down the album, fizzing among their usual coordinates: horror disco, retro wave and soundtrack sounds.

2015 saw datassette in generous form, the original offal brought 100 tracks of alleged offcuts. while a rare few actually live up to this self-deprecation, it couldnt be a more misleading title. now, selected offal has been boiled down to a gravy-like substance for a vinyl release by the nice folks at shipwrec. after discussions with the artist, and suggestions from fans, seventeen prime cuts have been selected for the vinyl edition of offal, alongside a few brand new previously unheard nuggets and alternative versions. expect a buffet of delights. smooth electronica, abrasive funk, out-there acid experimentation, chip tune chicanery and everything in between from this chameleon of machine music.

american experimental musican shane english continues in a long tradition of outsider electronics as hes been humbly prolific in his output though the years involving himself in numerous recording projects.collaborating with jonah lange in their group corporate park as well as an ongoing collab with beau wanzer (seeing a release last year under the cp/bw name), english now commits his second full length solo offering to vinyl in the form of the general dimensions lp. sparse machine driven electronics dominate the recording providing a back drop for the occasional pulsating rhythm, metallic clank or floating obscured vocal. while it is a dark and sparse affair there is a quiet downtrodden beauty throughout giving the recording a sense of uncertain serenity in an almost shoegazey way. highly recommended for those into early electronics.

lp reissues cut from the long-awaited 2010 digital remasters for the first time on vinyl and cd, original release from 1980. reissues of a legendary artist, pioneer of the french electronic music. the french proto-electro is making a come-back as we’ve seen it with the success of both cosmic machine compilations. their 7” “onyx” sold over 3 million copies worldwide. space art is behind the massive hits: “onyx”, “give me love”, “love in c minor” and more. one of half of the band, dominique perrier, is one of legend jean-michel jarre’s closest collaborators. recognized as a keyboard virtuoso, he worked on all jarre’s albums from “rendez-vous” (1986)to “oxygène 7-1” (1997) and still tours with him around the world. space art also toured with him in china in the early ’80s. alongside jean-michel jarre and cerrone they are one of the most influential bands that pioneered electro music.

the extraordinary prolongation of sound jerked polly’s pretty head away from her work at the calibration machine. today’s jobs had seen her at her thorough and meticulous best but as afternoon melted easily into evening, these latest reverberations meant she’d no longer be able to focus to the level required. her boss had just dropped the bomb. as her ear drums filtered the noise, the technician’s bright mind was flooded with delight, her eyes no longer felt dry and tight with concentration, she was caught riding the crest of a massive wave of admiration. sitting her specs on the desk and pushing herself off the comfortable heat of her work stool, miss filla let the soundwaves pull her to her feet and carry her off to the main source of the captivating music. in honour of dixon avenue basement jams spending four years at the forefront of the global electronic music scene a new release was planned to shake the foundation to the very core. techno wizard big miz had been charged with delivering the goods and by the gods, the glaswegian had cracked it! he’d created, not just new tunes, but a whole new fucking genre. polly could feel the vibrations pulsating through every part of her curvaceous body as she sashayed along to the seductive beat.

the turbo debut from gilmer galibard is a collection of four dark, visceral techno floor-destroyers from a young canary islands-based producer about whom we know relatively little. it also marks the labels first release to feature a swear in the title, offering a foreboding glimpse of the paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror contained within. by now you will have heard the demo in its entirety and are still dancing whether you want to or not. for my purposes, you will use the search engine optimization terms dark, visceral, techno, floor-destroyers and paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror to ensure that it finds its way to the 83 people who need to hear the release through this specific channel. you may tell people i am 26 years old and from the canary islands both facts are true and sound comforting enough but as you now know this does not matter. print this in its entirety and leave the release title unchanged. i would say ive said too much but that is impossible because as youve come to understand all of this has already happened.

sebastian maschat a.k.a. stoneage kid has been around in the house music scene for about 15 years now: cult stoner house with extra produktionen , drummer in erlend oye s whitest boy alive and numerous other projects. stoneage kid is an hardware / mpc based act, with own vocals and a very distinctive electro pop aesthetique. his first ep on smile for a while creally sounds like captain comatose meeting isolee in some purple haze panic room. you ll find melancholic drum machine jams, some serious synths, lotsa vocoder and a lot of bassline-bumping. phillip lauer delivers a refreshingly cheesy remix with god singing solo and the holy ghost on drums just as expected. hang on to a dream is quite a special tune, written and sung by german indie veteran otto von bismarck. this remix version is really something for intimate connoiseurs of both pop and house music.

high summer. sun is shining and the bordello is open to newcomers, the latest being slovenia’s ichisan. a 12” that bulldozes barriers, metamundus seamlessly slips between electro disco, braindance acid and gilded funk. writhing 303 jerks are tempered by warm-hearted key changes for the title track, patterns ducking into playful frolics and lush deeps. and this desire to toy with convention is what characterises the ep. bitter chords are sugared, machine grooves with nods to the dancefloors of the 70s, spaceflights with undertones of chicago, ichisan brings all together in a 12” that is as unique as it is addictive.

the second release of another earth is upon us and this time it s all about proper detroit techno combined with distorted left wing machine house. the label combines 2 acts together in a split ep series which compliment each others sound. for the a-side the highly talented producer, plural (separate skills, metroplex, u.s.), created 2 essential detroit techno tracks. the a1 is a warm uplifting peak time bomb and the a2 has a darker vibe concentrated on the groove. the b-side hosts 2 tracks from the intriguing mind of hakim murphy (machine dreams, chicago, u.s.). the b1 is a heavy distorted peak time house banger while the b2 is quite the opposite, deep and obscure.

growing more deeply into raars punk ethos, maelstrom and louisahhh s tracks on the labels fourth release are as much about process as end product. several days of one-room, one-take live sessions involving guitar feedback, machine cacophony and endless growling and shouting resulted in hurry and listen. these song were molded into work that is at once unconventional and club-ready with much effort in preserving the feral qualities of the original material.

following the excellently received dilation lp on film, the duo return to the berlin based imprint for a remix package featuring faltydl, grand optimist, djrum & portable sunsets. erol sarp & lukas vogels ingenious use of the grand piano has won them many plaudits over the years. working solely with the sounds of the grand piano and a set of 20 self-built hammers hitting the piano on different parts - filtered & warped in an extraordinary fashion, the pair craft dense, rousing music - kept fresh & current with nods to idm, ambient & techno. as such, the original recordings are fertile ground for remix opportunities, and the film label call on a whos who of left-field electronica to reimagine the work. nyc native faltydl takes on newtons cradle, flipping the original and turning in a stepping, psychedelic slice of half time proto-footwork while both phillip otterbach, operating under his grand optimist alias, and 2nd drops djrum offer tripping, ambient reinterpretations. 1080p s portable sunsets reimagines key lp cut neon as fuzzy beach house jam, reseting the original & eeking out a wholly different energy with driven drum machine hits & a soothing vox line.

illusory house and techno from new york native image man, following up a release on crucial newcomer label sunal/perabob with another four-track 12” of windy, paradoxical tracks built from samples and drum machine. “glance” shifts further into a weirded out but druggily decadent realm where he’s found looping the reflections of disco, soul and ancient pop samples into his own spaced and primitive euphorias, starting out with the slowmo downbeat of “more” before the more apprehensive rhythms of “else” end up filtering out into a pool of a reverberant samples that echoes out the second half. from the image man himself: “we trust in the sound we take for granted—the music wouldn t lead us astray, would it? emotions can lead us astray, the wanting to feel, the wishing of forever lasting, the pleading for change, the expectation of ecstasy. just a quick glance in the mirror.”

d3 elements continues to mine the fertile soil of midwest inspired house, techno and electro with this fantastic new album from michael dykehouse (sometimes found turning out experimental fare on planet mu and ghostly). here the grooves are immediate and engaging across nine tracks, from the bubbly -meltdown morning- to the spooked-out -clock division-, touching on a range of styles all bound together by a commitment to classic drum machine beats and synthesiser tones. this is far from a throwback record though, instead celebrating dykehouse s innate musicality through all manner of tempos and moods and coming out as a well-rounded long player in the process.

having already issued a few cassettes via his own harsh riddims label as well as cgi’s sister label dka records, ryan parks brings his fit of body project to cgi for his debut 12inch, release. here we are treated with two previously unreleased original cuts as well as galcher lustwerk and twins reworks of a pair of older tunes. fit of body’s sound is unique among the current crop of bedroom dance producers in that it can ignite a dancefloor while still feeling deeply personal. this mood is enhanced by the way parks colours his tracks with his own voice. his approach to adding live instrumentation to the arrangements lends a handmade delicacy otherwise lacking in so much hyper-quantized machine music. these are tracks that will feel at home in the dj booth, your living room and your bedroom.
